Recycling: Making the Industry Safe for Workers
Presenter: Marshall Bertram, Esq. WNYCOSH Worker Center
Waste management is one of the most dangerous industries in the US and, among workers in the field, recycling sorters in Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) have an especially high injury rate. The hazards stem from lack of training, failure to mitigate on-site hazards and follow safety regulations. These dangers are exacerbated by the prevalent use of temp labor, constant turnover, and poverty wages in MRFs. In June of this year, National COSH, along with MassCOSH, GAIA and the Partnership for Working Families released a new report
entitled “Sustainable & Safe Recycling: Protecting Workers Who Protect the Planet” highlighting the dangerous working conditions in the industry. Join us for a brief presentation and discussion on MRFs and what’s happening locally.
